AFRICA

For the Elucidation of the Abbe Gaultier's Geographical Games

by Jehosaphat Aspin 1822

Published by John Harris, London 1829

in Jehosaphat Aspin's "A Course of Geography by means of instructive Games, invented by the Abbe Gaultier"

An original 19th century antique map of Africa enhanced with attractive original hand colouring.

Dated in the plate, (1823) but published in 1829.

The Abbe Gaultier (Abbot A.E. Camille Gaultier) fled to England from the French revolution and set up a school for fellow refugees and their children.

His then innovative approach was to make education enjoyable and he pioneered the idea of teaching students through instructive games.

He published several books for this purpose, including his "Course of Geography" in which each map was presented in two forms.

One was left blank and the other was printed with the place names inserted. The student was required to enter the place names on the blank version.

This example is one of the completed maps.

A few minor edge tears have been repaired verso, and some light wear can be seen to the original centre fold.

Light creasing also indicates signs of use.

Approx. 16.5" x 13.5" (420mm x 340mm) map area only with margins beyond.
