An impressive and good sized copper engraved bird's eye view offering a detailed street plan of part of old Amsterdam around the Gast Huys or hospital.

Skirted by the Rokin, R.Amstel, the Oude Turfmarkt and Nieuwe Doelen Straat with 18 individual buildings within the hospital (or hotel) identified in a numbered key below the engraving.

A crisp, dark impression which would frame up well for display.

Fine condition, free of repairs or restoration. Centre fold as issued (very faint).

Approx. 13.5" x 10" (340mm x 260mm) image area only, with good margins all round.

Caspar Commelin (1636 - 1693) was a well known printer, bookseller and publisher in late 17th century Amsterdam.
He was also a noted historian of his native city and is best known today for his beautifully illustrated Beschryvinge van Amsterdam or Description of Amsterdam.
Most of the fine copper engraved views are by Petrus Schenk and are characterised by the inclusion of busy street and waterway scenes around the grand buildings of the city.
