Vol 1
By John Harris
Published by D.Midwinter London 1719 at The Three Crowns in St. Paul's Churchyard.
This is the first (and only) edition of Harris's definitive history of the county of Kent. Only Volume 1 was ever completed and it was published posthumously in 1719. It includes Parts 1&2 of the intended 5, covering the topography and civil history of the county which arguably are the most interesting, with its highly detailed descriptions of Kent's towns, villages and manors.
The county map and country house engravings are all lacking, but otherwise intact and tightly bound. The ommissions are amply reflected in the low price at a fraction of the cost.
The leather bindings are in good condition with signs of wear and some minor damage is evident to the spine. (see photos)
The text and remaining engravings are in fine condition with only very occasional spotting and just one or two leaves with some creasing and soiling. All in all a lovely record of early 18th century Kent.
Folio, approx 16" x 10" (400mm x 250mm).
