A beautiful,  stipple engraved antique botanical tree print with added hand colour entitled

RED BIRCH

BETULA RUBRA

Also  known as Black or River Birch, native to the whole of North America

Engraved by Bessin after Redoute and published circa 1850, Philadelphia by the American  naturalist Thomas Nuttall  for

"The North American Sylva; or, a Description of the Forest Trees of the United States, Canada, and Nova Scotia." 

These fine, vibrant engravings  are highly desirable, superbly decorative & quite rare, so they are considered very collectable.

Fine condition save for some slight overspill of paint into the right hand margin, blank verso. 

Measuring approx. approx 9"x 5.5"( 230mm x 140mm) to the clearly defined plate mark.

"The North American Sylva; or, a Description of the Forest Trees of the United States, Canada, and Nova Scotia." This important work by Francois Andre Michaux was first published in France between 1810 and 1813 with handcolored stipple engravings by the great French botanical artists P.J. Redoute, H.J. Redoute and Pancrace Bessa; it was printed and published in the United States in Philadelphia in 1857 with supplementary volumes by the American naturalist Thomas Nuttall. The plates, most of which depict a branch, flower and fruit, document the abundance of trees native to the United States. .
