Antique Fish Print

PIPER

by Edward Donovan

From "The Natural History of British Fishes" by Edward Donovan, Published London 1804 by F&C Rivington.

An attractive original antique print. This is plate 108, the Piper, Trigla lyra, a species of Gurnard, accompanied by the related text.

A beautiful hand coloured lithograph, heightened in places with gum arabic. The original colours remain bright and fresh. Dated in the plate.

The lifelike scaly sheen created by the use of a delicately applied varnish of gum arabic unfortunately is not captured by the camera but adds greatly to the visual appeal of these fine prints.

A wonderful fish print for framing and display.

Fine clean condition, free of repairs or restoration.

Approx. 8" x 4.5"(200mm x 120mm) to the plate-mark, as displayed in the image provided, with good margins beyond.
Printed on heavy grade wove paper, blank verso.

Edward Donovan. (1768 - 1837) was a notable zoologist, illustrator and author of a number of successful works on Natural History including fish, insects, birds and shellfish. He was also the proprietor of the London Museum and Institute of Natural History.
