An interesting set of highly detailed copper engraved maps of Senegal, West Africa on one sheet. St. Louis was founded by the French in 1659 and Fort St. Joseph was a trading post up the Senegal River. The slave trade was prominent and the inset plan of the fort indicates the position of "slave booths".
Fine condition, fold lines as issued.
Approx. 15" x 9" (390mm x 230mm) map area only, with good margins beyond.

Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville (1697 -1782)
French cartographer to the King, he was particularly noted for his refusal to slavishly copy the work of his predecessors as was so common at that time. His maps of ancient geography especially, were based on extensive research and he was not afraid to leave large areas of his maps completely blank if he did not have sufficient evidence to draw on.
