A fine copper engraved original antique map of The British Isles from the 1607 edition of the Mercator-Hondius "Atlas Minor".
An attractive and striking map enhanced with later hand colouring.
The title is displayed in a strapwork cartouche and a second cartouche houses scales of German and English miles.
An excellent example of this somewhat scarce map.
Fine, clean condition, free of repairs or restoration, no folds, Latin text verso.
Approx. 7" x 5.5" (180mm x 140mm) map area only, with good margins beyond.
Printed on hand laid paper which remains stable and robust.

Gerard Mercator (1512-1594) was a leading Flemish cartographer whose influence on map making cannot be exaggerated. His famous Mercator map projection is still in use to this day. He also originated the use of the term "Atlas" to describe a book of maps. After his death, the plates fell into the hands of Jodocus Hondius who published further editions of the maps.
