A fine copper engraved large format original antique map of The British Isles.
Engraved by Lotter's son Mathias for his father's "Atlas Novus".
An attractive and striking map with original hand colouring.
Features the coats of arms of England, Scotland and Ireland and the title is displayed in an elaborate rococo cartouche. Both of these are uncoloured as issued.
Some minor chipping to the upper extremities not affecting the map area. A small perforation (in Somerset) has been repaired verso together with a minor edge split (margin only). Central fold line as issued. Otherwise a handsome map in fine condition.
Approx. 23" x 19" (580mm x 480mm) map area only, with good margins beyond.
Printed on hand laid paper which remains stable and robust, blank verso.

Tobias Conrad Lotter (1717-1777) came from humble origins as a baker's son but entered the world of map making by marrying the daughter of successful cartographer Mathaus Seutter and joining the family business. He continued after Seutter's death to become a leading German mapmaker.
