Original Antique Map
INSULAE ALBION et HIBERNIA
Cum minoribus adjacentibus
by
JOHANNES BLAEU
Published Amsterdam circa 1645
A fine Blaeu copper engraved Ptolemaic map of The British Isles with original hand colouring.
The title is displayed in a decorative cartouche. Latin text verso.
Scotland is orientated to the east and the mythical island of Thule is prominent above the Orkneys. The ancient tribal areas and Roman cities are all marked.
Minor age related blemishes as seen and some chipping and splitting to paper extremities have been repaired, not affecting map area. The original central fold has been reinforced verso. Otherwise an attractive and interesting map which would frame up nicely for display.
A crisp, dark impression. The heavy grade hand laid paper remains robust and stable.
Approx. 17.5" x 15" (440mm x 380mm) map area only, with good margins beyond.

Willem Janzoon Blaeu (1571 -1638) founded the Blaeu publishing company which dominated the map making industry of 17th century Netherlands. His sons Joan (Johannes) and Cornelius continued the family business after Willem's death in 1638. Their greatest achievement was perhaps the famous atlas "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Sive, Atlas Novus", which eventually ran to 12 volumes and was published in several languages from 1635 - 1662. The print shop and warehouse was destroyed by fire in 1672 and Willem's last son died the following year.
