CAMBRIDGESHIRE
by Thomas Kitchin
Published London 1769 by T. Kitchin and J.Capper in
"Kitchin's Pocket Atlas of England and Wales, Drawn to One Scale."
An original 18th century copper engraved antique map of Cambridgeshire, England.
An interesting map enhanced with later hand colouring. Also features a scale of miles, key to symbols and compass rose.
Kitchin's Pocket Atlas of 1769 took the unprecedented approach of representing all the counties on the same scale.
Smaller counties were printed two to a page, larger ones occupied a page alone or were folded into the atlas.
Kitchin even changed the shape of some counties to fit the concept and the titles were printed separately across the top of the page.
Very few were published and the maps today are quite rare.
Fine condition, free of repairs or restoration, central fold line as issued.
Approx. 7.5" x 5.5" (190m x 145mm) map area only, with good margins beyond.
Thomas Kitchin (1718- 1784) was a prolific engraver and map publisher in 18th century London.
His maps were used extensively to illustrate travel books and periodicals such as the London Magazine.
Strip road maps were another speciality and he collaborated with Emanuel and Thomas Bowen to produce some fine atlases.
His own General Atlas was published in 1773.
