Product Description

DEVON SOUTH COAST

by Greenvile Collins (also Greenville)

Published London 1756 by Mount & Page.

An original untitled 18th century copper engraved antique sea chart of the South Devon coast.

From Greenville Collins' "Great Britain's Coasting Pilot" published by Mount and Page in 1756

Covers the south Devon coast from Newton Ferrers  (Newton Ferry) to Exmouth through Bigbury on Sea (Bigberry), Salcombe (Saltcombe), Start Bay, Dartmouth, Brixham, Torquay (Tarkey) and Teignmouth (Tinmouth).

A fascinating and detailed sea chart with a dedication to Thomas, Earl of Pembroke and Montgomery Baron Herbert in an elaborate cartouche with putti, fruit bowls and a coat of arms. The cartouche is flanked each side with statues of Justicia and Prudentia and features an engraved view of "King William landing November 1688". This marks the invasion by William of Orange with an army of 14,000 at Brixham.

The detail includes soundings, anchorages, shoals and rocks as well as settlements ashore, including individual buildings.

A crisp dark impression on robust hand laid paper, with central fold as issued, blank verso.

Fine condition other than light staining as seen, free of repairs or restoration.

Approx. 24" x 20.5" (640mm x 520mm) overall. Printed area approx. 22.5" x 17.5" (570mm x 450mm).

Captain Greenville Collins first published his Coasting Pilot in 1693.
His fine charts transformed navigation around the British coasts and were re-published in various editions for the next 100 years or so.
They remained largely unchanged throughout this time as testament to Collins original surveys aboard HMS Merlin and HMS Monmouth.
