Product Description

THE MENAI STRAIT

by Greenvile Collins (also Greenville)

Published London 1756 by Mount & Page.

An untitled original 18th century copper engraved antique sea chart of The Menai Strait between Anglesey and Caernarfonshire in mainland Wales.

From Greenville Collins' "Great Britain's Coasting Pilot" published by Mount and Page in 1756

Covers the Menai Strait and adjacent coasts in great detail with soundings, anchorages, shoals and rocks as well as settlements ashore, including individual buildings. Covers Beaumaris, Bangor, Conwy, Caernarvon, Great Ormes Head (Armeshead), Little Orme, (Llandudno not yet established), Levan Sands with the ancient low tide roadway and ferry to Beaumaris, The Swellies (Swilly), etc.

An inset chart of Puffin Island or Priest Holme Island and the western tip of Anglesey is also featured.

A fascinating and attractive sea chart with a dedication to Sir William Williams displayed in a decorative cartouche adorned with putti and a coat of arms.

Enhanced with attractive later hand colouring.

A crisp dark impression on robust hand laid paper, with central fold as issued, blank verso.

Some very minor damp staining around the margins as seen, otherwise fine, clean condition and a wonderful chart for framing and display.

Approx. 24.5" x 20.5" (620mm x 520mm) overall.

Captain Greenville Collins first published his Coasting Pilot in 1693.
His fine charts transformed navigation around the British coasts and were re-published in various editions for the next 100 years or so.
They remained largely unchanged throughout this time as testament to Collins original surveys aboard HMS Merlin and HMS Monmouth.
