Product Description

NORTH SEA, EAST COAST OF ENGLAND, KENT, SUFFOLK, ESSEX,

NORFOLK, THAMES ESTUARY,  FRANCE, NETHERLANDS and BELGIUM

by Greenvile Collins (also Greenville)

Published London 1756 by Mount & Page.

An original untitled 18th century copper engraved antique sea chart of the southern part of the North Sea and the bordering countries.

Covers Rye, Dover, Ipswich, Great Yarmouth, Malden, Colchester etc. in England.

The French coast is covered from Calais eastwards into Belgium with Gravelines, Dunkirk, Newport, Ostend and Bruges.

The Netherlands is covered in detail, including Antwerp, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Delft, Frisian Islands etc and of course a very different coastline to the present day.

Enhanced with attractive later hand colouring this would make a handsome map for display.

From Greenville Collins' "Great Britain's Coasting Pilot" published by Mount and Page in 1756

A fascinating and detailed sea chart.

A dedication to Sir John Ashby, Admiral of the Blue is displayed in a nautical cartouche.

The detail includes soundings, sandbanks, shoals and rocks as well as settlements ashore.

A crisp dark impression on robust hand laid paper, with central fold as issued, blank verso.

Fine, clean condition other than insignificant staining in the outer margins as seen. Free of repairs or restoration.

Approx. 24" x 20.5" (640mm x 520mm) overall. Printed area approx. 22.5" x 17.5" (570mm x 450mm).

Captain Greenville Collins first published his Coasting Pilot in 1693.
His fine charts transformed navigation around the British coasts and were re-published in various editions for the next 100 years or so.
They remained largely unchanged throughout this time as testament to Collins original surveys aboard HMS Merlin and HMS Monmouth.
