A fine county map of Northamptonshire with attractive original hand colouring. Features a scale of statute miles, and the title is displayed within a compass rose. Dated (1787) and credited to Cary in the plate. The quality and high level of detail can be appreciated in the close up image below.

Fine condition save for light marginal foxing, as evident from the image and not encroaching on the map area . On hand laid paper, blank verso, not folded. A page of associated text is included.

Approx. 10.5" x 8.5" (260mm x 210mm) map area only with good margins beyond.

John Cary (1754 - 1835) was a highly prolific and successful map maker. His fine engraving skills were well employed in producing accurate and usable maps, without over embellishment or unnecessary adornment. Initially he worked from his premises in London's Strand until a disastrous fire in 1820 forced him to move to St. James street. His finest works were perhaps the "General Atlas of The World" and the elegant "Universal Atlas" in 1808. The "New and Correct English Atlas" was first published in 1787 and subsequent editions followed into the early 19th century. After his death in 1835 the business was acquired by C.F.Cruchley.
