Published London 1806 by John Stockdale in the Richard Gough edition of Camden's Britannia.

An attractive and good sized copper engraved map of England, Wales and Scotland during the time of the Roman Empire. A key in Roman numerals identifies the many tribal areas.

 Enhanced with later hand colouring - a good looking map for display. 

 The left hand margin has been extended with contemporary paper to facilitate mounting/matting for framing. Otherwise fine, unmarked condition. A crisp, dark impression printed on good quality robust wove paper, no folds, blank verso.

Approx. 13.5" x 9.5" (340mm x 240mm) map area only with margins beyond.

John Cary (1754 - 1835) was a highly prolific and successful map maker. His fine engraving skills were well employed in producing accurate and usable maps, without over embellishment or unnecessary adornment. Initially he worked from his premises in London's Strand until a disastrous fire in 1820 forced him to move to St. James street. His finest works were perhaps the "General Atlas of The World" and the elegant "Universal Atlas" in 1808. The "New and Correct English Atlas" was first published in 1787 and subsequent editions followed into the early 19th century. After his death in 1835 the business was acquired by C.F.Cruchley.
