"The Royal Illustrated Atlas of Modern Geography"


  A pair of highly detailed maps of parts of the Russian Empire surrounded by attractive illustrations of local scenes.

The maps are entitled;

"The Aral Sea according to Khanikoff"  and "Kamchatka according to A.Erman"

Both maps engraved by Swanston after Petermann. 


The illustrations include; Kirghiz-Kazak, Petropaulovski, Post conveyance Kamchatka
,

A Yurst or winter hut, A Balagan or summer hut, Kirghiz hunting with the falcon and Kirghiz females.  


An attractive and decorative item enhanced with original colouring, printed on heavy grade paper, blank verso. Unfolded.

 A light horizontal printing crease (as issued) runs across the upper part of the map with some faint associated discolouration as seen.
The upper edge also bears some binding perforations and staining.


 Approx. 18"x 13" (470mm x 320mm) overall.

Archibald Fullarton (1809 -1896) originally published his Royal Illustrated Atlas from 1852 as a part work and it remains an iconic atlas characterized by finely detailed engraving and wonderful illustrations. Even the maps lacking illustrations are delicately coloured in pastel shades and are widely collected for their decorative appeal.
