Published Paris circa 1750 by Jacques Nicolas Bellin.

An interesting pair of 18th century copper engraved charts of the Senegal River, Senegal, West Africa based on drawings by a French engineer in 1718. The river is charted from St.Louis on the Atlantic coast up to the mountains of Govina. Enhanced with attractive hand colouring.
Fine condition other than a minor edge tear repaired verso. Fold lines as issued, blank verso.
Approx. 11" x 8.5" (290mm x 220mm) map area only, with margins beyond on a medium grade hand laid paper. 


Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703 -1772)
Bellin was chief cartographer to the French Navy and Hydrograhic office (Depot de la Marine). He produced many fine maps and seacharts in such publications as the "Atlas Maritime", and the "Hydorographie Francaise". He published 580 smaller format charts in the "Petit Atlas Maritime" and contributed many maps to Prevost's "Histoire Generale des Voyages". Noted for painstaking accuracy and fine workmanship his influence spread far beyond his native France.
