Antique Map

A Map of

SOUTH AMERICA

From the Best Authorities

by John Lodge Cowley

Engraved by Emanuel Bowen and published London 1753 by Thomas Cox and James Hodges in;

"A New and Easy Introduction to the study of Geography by way of Question and Answer".

An original 18th century copper engraved antique map of South America, enhanced with later hand colouring.

An atttractive map with the Falklands partially charted together with unknown lands south of there, possibly South Georgia.

Some interesting annotations include "C.Horn dis. by La Maire 1616". Much of present day Argentina is charted as Terra Magellanica with Tucumania to the north.

The northern region is shown as Terra Firma and Amazonia is described as "This country and its inhabitants are but little known".

A fine example of this very scarce map.

The book itself was originally written as a teaching aid for students by Johann Hubner, a German scholar.

Cowley translated the book into English from high Dutch and added a set of interesting maps to illustrate the work.

Fine, clean condition, free of repairs or restoration, fold lines as issued, blank verso.

Approx. 9" x 5" (225mm x 130mm) map area only, with margins beyond.
