Antique Map

A MAP OF THE BEACONS IN KENT

as they were appointed by Sr William Brooke

Ld. Cobham Ld. Chamberlain to Queen Elizabeth Ld. Lieut't of Kent.

From Lombard's Perambulations of Kent.

by John Harris after William Lambard

Published by D.Midwinter, London 1719 in "The History of Kent" by John Harris.

An original early 18th century copper engraved antique map of Kent to show the network of beacon fires intended as first warning of impending invasion by the Spanish Armada.

The map is based on an earlier work by William Lambard in his "Perambulations of Kent" published in 1596 amid accusations of carelessly informing state enemies of the beacon's locations.

Above the map is an engraved view of Reculver church and an acknowledgement to "Mr. Richard Mount, Citizen and Stationer of London native of Kent" who provided the plate.

The leading image shows the map as it would appear when mounted/matted ready for framing. See also close-up and overall views.

Some insignificant age related blemishes as seen otherwise fine, clean condition, centre fold as issued.

 Approx. 18" x 15" (450mm x 390mm) overall.
