Antique Map

A New and Correct map of the

WORLD

From the Latest Observations

by John Senex

Published London 1749 in "Geographhy Anatomiz'd" by Patrick Gordon.

An original 18th century copper engraved antique map of The World in twin hemispheres.

Mary Senex continued the map business after John's death and she has added her name to the plate.

California is shown as an island and North America has an uncharted north west coastline. The North American continent is divided into New Mexico, Florida, Virginia, New England, New Britain, New France, New North Wales and New Found Land. A short section of New Zealand's east coast appears in the Pacific along with the coast of a mythical Davy's Land and Island of John Fernando off South America. Only the west coast of Australia (New Holland)is charted and is contiguous with New Guinea. An interesting map.

The left hand margin has been cropped with some loss to the border line in both upper and lower left corners. The margin has been reinstated to facilitate mounting/matting for framing. The map is otherwise in fine condition, with later hand colouring. Fold lines as issued.

Approx. 12.5" x 7" (310mm x 180mm) overall.
