An impressive and good sized copper engraved view of the Aalmoezeniers Weeshuis or Chaplains Orphanage (later the Palace of Justice) on Prinsengracht in central Amsterdam.
Interesting foreground detail with a variety of boats and a busy street scene.
A crisp, dark impression enhanced with later hand colouring which has been delicately and tastefully applied.
Fine condition, free of repairs or restoration. Centre fold as issued (very faint).
Approx. 13.5" x 10" (340mm x 260mm) image area only, with good margins all round.
Printed on robust hand laid paper, blank verso.

Caspar Commelin (1636 - 1693) was a well known printer, bookseller and publisher in late 17th century Amsterdam.
He was also a noted historian of his native city and is best known today for his beautifully illustrated Beschryvinge van Amsterdam or Description of Amsterdam.
Most of the fine copper engraved views are by Petrus Schenk and are characterised by the inclusion of busy street and waterway scenes around the grand buildings of the city.
