STOKE BISHOP
The Seat of Sr Thomas Cann
Drawn & engraved by Johannes Kip
Published 1712 in the first edition of "The Ancient and Present State of Glocestershire" by Sir Robert Atkyns.
An original early 18th century copper engraved antique print of Stoke House, Stoke Bishop, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England by Johannes Kip. Now in Suburban Bristol the house then stood in splendid isolation. Note the sailing ships plying the Avon in the background.
The leading image shows the print to the platemark, as it would appear when mounted/matted ready for framing. See also close-up and overall views.
Kip's famous series of sweeping bird's eye views of fine stately homes are widely collected for their aesthetic qualities as well as being valuable historic records.
The accurate portrayal of the formal gardens and grounds are of particular interest.
.A crisp dark impression from the scarce first edition of Atkyns' Gloucestershire on robust hand laid paper, blank verso.
Some very light creasing and minor age related blemishes otherwise a lovely example in fine, clean condition, centre fold as issued, free of repairs or restoration.
Approx. 18" x 16" (450mm x 400mm) overall.
