Antique Sea Chart
To the Hon'ble the Magistrates of the
Citty of ABERDEENE
by Greenvile Collins (also Greenville)
Published London 1756 by Mount & Page.
An original 18th century copper engraved antique sea chart of the coastline around Aberdeen, Scotland enhanced with attractive later hand colouring.
From Greenville Collins' "Great Britain's Coasting Pilot" published by Mount and Page in 1756
Covers Aberdeen, Montrose, Arbroath, Dundee, St.Andrews, Crail etc.
North is orientated to the right.
An interesting and attractive sea chart, perfect for framing and display.
The detail includes anchorages, soundings, shoals, rocks and settlements ashore.
The title and dedication is displayed in attractive cartouche and a second cartouche pays tribute to the survey of the coast by "Mr Mar, an injenious marinner of Dundee."
A crisp dark impression on robust hand laid paper, blank verso.
Some very minor damp staining can be seen around the margins which does not affect the printed area other than a small patch to the lower end of the original fold line. Two small worm holes can be seen in the upper margin and a section of the margin in the lower right hand corner has been trimmed as seen, again not affecting the chart itself. Otherwise fine condition, free of repairs or restoration.
Approx. 24" x 20.5" (620mm x 520mm) overall.

Captain Greenville Collins first published his Coasting Pilot in 1693.
His fine charts transformed navigation around the British coasts and were re-published in various editions for the next 100 years or so.
They remained largely unchanged throughout this time as testament to Collins original surveys aboard HMS Merlin and HMS Monmouth.
