Product Description

Antique Sea Chart

NORTH SEA, EAST COAST OF ENGLAND

by Greenvile Collins (also Greenville)

Published London 1756 by Mount & Page.

An original untitled 18th century copper engraved antique sea chart of the southern part of the North Sea and the bordering countries.

Covers from London and the Thames estuary up to Berwick on Tweed with the coasts of Kent, Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, Lincolnshire, Yorkshire, Durham and Northumberland.

Parts of the coasts of France, Belgium and the Netherlands are also covered.

Enhanced with attractive later hand colouring this would make a handsome map for display.

From Greenville Collins' "Great Britain's Coasting Pilot" published by Mount and Page in 1756

A fascinating and detailed sea chart.

A dedication to Sir Ralph Delaval, Admiral of the Red is displayed in an ornate cartouche.

The detail includes soundings, sandbanks, shoals and rocks as well as numerous towns and cities ashore.

A crisp dark impression on robust hand laid paper, with central fold as issued, blank verso.

A few stains here and there as seen, otherwise fine condition, free of repairs or restoration.

Approx. 24" x 20.5" (640mm x 520mm) overall. Printed area approx. 22.5" x 17.5" (570mm x 450mm).

Captain Greenville Collins first published his Coasting Pilot in 1693.
His fine charts transformed navigation around the British coasts and were re-published in various editions for the next 100 years or so.
They remained largely unchanged throughout this time as testament to Collins original surveys aboard HMS Merlin and HMS Monmouth.
