Product Description

Antique Sea Chart

SCILLY ISLES, LAND'S END, CORNWALL

by Greenvile Collins (also Greenville)

Published London 1756 by Mount & Page.

An original 18th century copper engraved antique sea chart of The Scilly Isles and south west Cornwall.

From Greenville Collins' "Great Britain's Coasting Pilot" published by Mount and Page in 1756

Covers the Scilly Isles and Cornwall from Land's End to Cape Cornwall, Penzance, Mousehole, Marazion (Market Jew), The Lizard, The Loe (Lough) etc.

A fascinating and detailed sea chart with the title and a dedication to "The Governor, Deputy Governor and Committees of The East India Company" displayed in an elaborate cartouche. A scale of leagues is adorned with putti to the lower left.

Enhanced with attractive later hand colouring.

The detail includes soundings, anchorages, shoals and rocks as well as settlements ashore, including individual buildings.

A crisp dark impression on robust hand laid paper, with central fold as issued, blank verso.

Some old ink stains and an indecipherable annotation are evident as seen, and some splitting to the lower central fold line has been reinforced. Otherwise the chart is in fine condition and these faults are amply reflected in the low price.

Approx. 24" x 20.5" (640mm x 520mm) overall. Printed area approx. 22.5" x 17.5" (570mm x 450mm).

Captain Greenville Collins first published his Coasting Pilot in 1693.
His fine charts transformed navigation around the British coasts and were re-published in various editions for the next 100 years or so.
They remained largely unchanged throughout this time as testament to Collins original surveys aboard HMS Merlin and HMS Monmouth.
