A fine large format copper engraved original antique map of The British Isles.

A second title appears in the upper margin as;

"A General Map of Great Britain and Ireland with part of Holland, Flandres, France &c Agreable to Modern History

by the Heirs of Late Mr Homann at Nuremberg 1749 Priviledged by Emperours Majesty"

A highly detailed map engraved by Tobias Mayer for the Homann Heirs which covers England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland and the adjacent coasts of France and the Netherlands.

An inset map covers the Shetland Islands.

The ornate title cartouche features a Royal Coat of Arms, weapons, flags and an impressive sea monster.

Greatly enhanced with attractive hand colouring. A striking and handsome map for display.

Fine condition other than two minor perforations, professionally repaired verso and barely visible.

Central fold line as issued.

Approx. 21.5" x 18.5" (540mm x 470mm) map area only, with good margins beyond.

Printed on hand laid paper which remains stable and robust, blank verso.

Johan Baptist Homann (1664-1724) was a leading German cartographer who founded his publishing company in 1702 in Nuremberg.

He was appointed as Imperial Geographer by The Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI in 1715

After his death in 1724 his son and heir Johan Christoph carried on the business under the banner of the Homann Heirs publishing company.
