An interesting , scarce and detailed , early 18th century antique road strip map showing the continuation of the route from London via Bromyard, Leominster,Prestaine
( Presteigne), Riadergowy ( Rhayder) to Aberiswith ( Aberystwyth).

Published in Thomas Gardner's

"A Pocket-Guide to the English Traveller: Being a Complete Survey and measurement of all the Principle Roads and Most Considerable Cross-Roads in England and Wales"

London: J. Tonson & J. Watts, 1719.

Plate 3

This atlas was never re-published and is therefore quite scarce.

The map depicts a route in the form of 7 vertical strips
showing the main road and crossroads leading to various towns along the way. The engraving details the surrounding topography including churches, rivers, bridges, pastures, woods, forests and hills. On each strip is a compass rose showing the direction of travel as well as the distance, in miles, from the start point.

Based on the earlier survey of the roads by John Ogilby and bearing a dedication to Sir John Fowler within the title cartouche.

For greater detail please view further close up images.

With original centrefold and light overall age toning otherwise unmarked, a crisp, dark impression which would frame well

Measuring approx 11" x 7" ( 280mm x 180mm )
