A fine, hand coloured original  antique  aquatint  of

COLD BATH FIELDS PRISON

Mount Pleasant, Clerkenwell, London.

Coldbath Fields Prison also known as the  Middlesex House of Correction  took its name from Cold Bath Spring, a medicinal spring discovered in 1697. The prison closed in 1877 & the site was transferred to the Post Office in 1889 . Today, the site is occupied by the Mount Pleasant sorting office.

 

 Published by Rudolph Ackermann (1764-1834) in his Repository of  Arts circa 1815 

These fine aquatints with original hand colouring are highly desirable. 

Light off setting otherwise fine condition.

Rudolph Ackermann (1764-1834) was one of the most important figures in the history of illustrated books. His attention to detail led to work of extraordinary quality.

 His magazine, "The Repository of Arts, Literature, Commerce, Manufactures, Fashion and Politics" known as Ackerman’s Repository, was published from 1809-1829  and was issued monthly for 20 years.
