An Accurate Map of

DERBYSHIRE

Divided into its Hundreds

by Emanuel Bowen

Published London 1777 by John & Carrington Bowles, Robert Sayer and John Bennett in "The Royal English Atlas".

An original 18th century copper engraved antique county map of Derbyshire enhanced with later hand colouring.

Dated in the plate. Quite Scarce.

The title is presented in pictorial cartouche featuring mill stones and quarrying tools.

A number of interesting annotations are printed around the map with information on important towns and the commerce and industry of the county.

The original margins have been close trimmed but the map has been professionally backed onto matching hand laid paper. This neatly extends the margins to facilitate mounting/matting.

Fine condition other than insignificant age related blemishes and a most attractive map for framing and display.

Approx. 19" x 16" (490mm x 400mm) map area only, with margins beyond as described. Central fold as issued but barely visible.

Emanuel Bowen (1714 -1767) and his son Thomas Bowen (d1790) were prolific engravers and map publishers in 18th century London.

Their maps were used extensively to illustrate travel books and periodicals such as the General Magazine and London Magazine.

They also worked extensively with their contemporaries, Thomas Kitchin and John Owen to produce successful atlases and road maps.

The Royal English Atlas was a smaller version of their previous Large English Atlas although the maps are still a good size and crammed with information. They are increasingly difficult to find.
