Henry  Besley  was one of the most innovative printers in Exeter during the mid 19th century. Henry's father Thomas had established his printing office in South Street , Exeter in the late 1790s.  He was also a  bookseller and bookbinder who continued his father's business printing directories, route books and handbooks that provided an account of the sights visible from the newly constructed railway lines.

George Townsend was a local Devon artist who made meticulous pencil sketches that were then copied by unnamed engravers.
