Hook pays tribute to the Dutch painter Aelbert Cuyp. Dated and titled in the plate.

James Clarke Hook (1819-1907) was London born, moving later to rural life near Godalming in Surrey.
He studied at the Royal Academy to which he became a full member in 1860.
He was also a member of the celebrated Victorian Etching Club and devoted much of his interest to coastal scenes in England and Europe
