A New Gradually Encreasing Compass Map of a Part of the Sea Coasts of

ENGLAND in which is Contined the Coasts of SUSSEX

Extending from Eastward of HASTINGS to ARUNDEL HAVEN

With their Shallownesses and Depths

by Gerard Van Keulen

Published Amsterdam circa 1720 in "De Nieuwe Groote Ligtende Zee-Fakel".

An original copper engraved antique sea chart of the Sussex coastline and English Channel.

Coverage is from Arundell Haven, (River Arun) through Rustington, Goring, Shoreham, Hove, Brighton, Newhaven, Seaford,

Beachy Head, Eastbourne (Bourn), Bexhill and Hastings to Fairlight.

The detail includes soundings, shoals, rocks and anchorages as well as settlements ashore.

The title is repeated in Dutch and three scales of miles are included.

There are a few insignificant edge nicks affecting margin extremities only

and a minor edge split to the original central fold has been reinforced verso, otherwise fine condition.

A crisp dark impression enhanced with attractive later hand colouring, this would make a handsome chart for display.

Approx. 24" x 21" (600mm x 530mm) overall.

Johannes Van Keulen (1634 -1689) founded the Van Keulen house of chart makers in Amsterdam in 1678 trading as "De Gekroonde Lootsman" or "The Crowned Pilot".
His son Gerard Van Keulen was instrumental in carrying the business forward and they became suppliers of sea charts to the Dutch East India Company.
Gerard's son Johannes II carried the business on right through the 1700s.
