The New Sea Map of the First Part of the

CHANNEL Betwext ENGLAND et FRANCE

by Gerard Van Keulen

Published Amsterdam circa 1700

An original copper engraved antique sea chart of the eastern part of the English Channel.

The title is repeated in French, Dutch, Spanish and Italian.

Coverage of the Sussex and Kent coasts of England extends from Dover to present day Bognor Regis including Brighton, Newhaven, Hastings, Rye, Shoreham etc.

The French coast extends from Calais to Colleville sur Mer including Le Havre, Caen, Fecamp, Honfleur, Dieppe, Etaples, Boulogne etc.

A fascinating and detailed sea chart with north orientated to the right. The sea area features compass roses, rhumb lines, sailing ship and sea monster.

The detail includes soundings, shoals, rocks and anchorages as well as settlements ashore.

A crisp dark impression on robust hand laid paper, with central fold as issued, blank verso.

Some professional repairs to the extreme corners and some light soiling otherwise fine condition.

Enhanced with attractive later hand colouring this would make a handsome chart for display.

Approx. 24" x 21" (610mm x 530mm) overall.

Johannes Van Keulen (1634 -1689) founded the Van Keulen house of chart makers in Amsterdam in 1678 trading as "De Gekroonde Lootsman" or "The Crowned Pilot".
His son Gerard Van Keulen was instrumental in carrying the business forward and they became suppliers of sea charts to the Dutch East India Company.
Gerard's son Johannes II carried the business on right through the 1700s.
