FLOODS NEAR ELY
Etched by Robert Farren
Published by Macmillan, London 1880 in "Etching and Etchers" by Philip Gilbert Hamerton
A very fine original 19th century untitled etching of flooded meadows around Ely in Cambridgeshire, England, as published in Hamerton's definitive work on the art form.
A sepia tinted and beautifully crafted atmospheric view with Ely Cathedral silhouetted on the skyline. Signed and dated in the plate.
Robert Farren (1832-1912) was a Cambridgeshire artist highly noted for his Fenland scenes.
This example is barely distinguishable from Farren's "Flood on the Fens" other than the addition of a flock of birds in the sky and minor differences to the clouds and tree-line.
Fine, clean condition, free of repairs or restoration, printed on robust heavy grade laid paper, blank verso.
Approx. 8" x 5" (200mm x 130mm) to the plate mark with good margins beyond.
