Please see close up image to appreciate the painstaking detail and quality.

John Gould (1804- 1881), was a noted English ornithologist who worked extensively with leading naturalists of the day including Charles Darwin. His work on the Galapagos finches was a central contribution to Darwin's "Origin of Species". Gould travelled the world with his wife Elizabeth observing and illustrating the native bird species. Elizabeth lithographed  the illustrations until her death in 1841 after which several other talented artists, including Edward Lear, William Hart, Henry Richter and Josef Wolf carried on the work under Gould's close supervision of the entire process. The quality of the artwork is of the highest standard and the vibrant and luminous yet accurate colouring creates a highly decorative image for display.
