YARMOUTH

and the Sands about it

by Greenville Collins

Published circa 1750

An original 18th century copper engraved antique sea chart of the Norfolk coastline around Great Yarmouth.

Covers from Eccles on Sea through Waxham, Hemsby, Caister on Sea, Winterton on Sea, Great Yarmouth and Corton to Lowestoft (Lastiffe), with north orientated to the left.

From Greenville Collins' "Great Britain's Coasting Pilot".

Enhanced with attractive later hand colouring this would make a handsome map for display.

An elaborate title cartouche includes a fishing scene with mermaids and laden fishing nets together with a dedication from Collins to Henry, Duke of Norfolk.

The detail includes soundings, shoals, rocks and anchorages as well as settlements ashore, including individual buildings.

A crisp dark impression on robust hand laid paper, with central fold as issued, blank verso.

Fine condition other than a minor edge tear repaired verso , margin only.

Approx. 25" x 20" (640mm x 500mm) overall. Printed area approx. 22" x 17.5" (560mm x 440mm).

Captain Greenville Collins first published his Coasting Pilot in 1693.
His fine charts transformed navigation around the British coasts and were re-published in various editions for the next 100 years or so.
They remained largely unchanged throughout this time as testament to Collins original surveys aboard HMS Merlin and HMS Monmouth.
