Drawn by Eliphalet Brown who was specifically selected to serve as artist on the expedition commanded by Commodore M.Perry and lithographed for the,
" Narrative of The Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan. Performed in the Years 1852, 1853 and 1854, under the command of Commodore M.C.Perry, United States Navy"
The mission was a great success, resulting in the 1854 signing of the Kanagawa Treaty.
This scene depicts a Temple entrance at Hakodate which was to become one of the first Treaty Ports of Japan
