LEECH FINDERS

Engraved by R&D Havell after George Walker

for "The Costume of Yorkshire" by George Walker

Published by Robinson and Son, Leeds 1814

A fine original aquatint of women collecting leeches in a Yorkshire pond.

The leeches were widely used for medicinal purposes and according to Walker the women who mainly came from Scotland for the purpose, collected them by standing bare legged in the water until the leeches attached themselves and were "thence transferred by the fair fingers of the lady to a small barrel or keg of water suspended at her waist".

Dated in the plate.

From a first edition of Walker's "The Costume of Yorkshire" accompanied by the interesting related text in English and French.

A fascinating record of Yorkshire life in Regency England first issued as a part work in 1813 to 1814 and published as a complete book in 1814.

An attractive print, ideal for framing and display.

Fine clean condition, free of repairs or restoration. The superb original colours remain bright and fresh.
