PLAN SHEWING THE POSITION OF THE DOUBLE BRIDGE

AND THE PROPOSED AVENUES THERETO

By George Dance, Architect.

Engraved by James Basire

Printed by Luke Hansard & Sons, London 1800

 As ordered by the House of Commons to be printed 28th July 1800
and to be reprinted 1803 in Volume 14 of the;

 "Report (1800) From the Select Committee upon the Improvement of the Port of London"

In 1799 a great competition was held, inviting the celebrated architects of the day to submit plans for a replacement for the weakened and ailing old London Bridge.

There were a number of grandiose and innovative designs considered before John Rennie's traditional stone bridge was selected. This plan shows George Dance's entry to the competition.

A detailed street plan of the City area between the Tower of London and Blackfriars Bridge showing Dance's double bridge design superimposed over the existing London Bridge.

The proposed new roads and bridges are highlighted in original hand colour.

 This would make an absorbing conversation piece and is a fascinating record of a rapidly changing London at the turn of the 18th/19th centuries.

Fine condition, free of repairs or restoration. Fold lines as issued with some light associated creasing.

 Approx. 20" x 12" (510mm x 310mm) map area only with titles and margins beyond.

Printed on good quality heavy grade wove paper, blank verso.
