THE ROAD FROM LONDON TO ST DAVID'S

An interesting , scarce and detailed , early 18th century antique road strip map, showing the first part of the route from London to St David's via Knightsbridge, Colnbrook, Slough, Maidenhead, Nettlebed and Abingdon.

Published in Thomas Gardner's

"A Pocket-Guide to the English Traveller: Being a Complete Survey and measurement of all the Principle Roads and Most Considerable Cross-Roads in England and Wales"

 London: J. Tonson & J. Watts, 1719.

Plate 14

This atlas was never re-published and therefore quite scarce.

The map depicts a route in the form of 6 vertical strips with a compass rose showing orientation; additionally, miles, furlongs, towns, churches, windmills, rivers and hills are depicted.

Based on the earlier survey of the roads by John Ogilby and bearing a dedication to Henry Ashurst lower margin.

For greater detail  please view further close up images.

With original centrefold and light overall age toning otherwise unmarked, a crisp, dark impression which would frame well

Measuring approx  11" x 7" ( 280mm x 180mm )
