Antique Map

THE ROAD FROM LONDON TO HITH

in KENT Actually Surveyed

Published by John Bowles c1749 in plate 20 of

"An Actual Survey of all Principal Roads of England & Wales "

An interesting, detailed, mid 18th century antique road strip map showing the route from London to Hythe, Kent via Southwark, Lewisham, Eltham, Farningham, Wrotham, Maidstone, Sandway and Ashford with many other settlements between.

John Bowles re-published the John Senex maps which are based on the earlier survey of the roads by John Ogilby. The maps were printed back to back and an unrelated map appears verso.

The map depicts a route in the form of 6 vertical strips each with a compass point showing orientation. Also shown are distances in miles from London together with towns, churches, windmills, rivers and hills which are shown pictorially.

Fine, clean condition, free of repairs or restoration.

Printed on hand laid paper, delicately enhanced with later hand colouring.

A most attractive map which would frame well.

Approx. 9" x 7" ( 230mm x 180mm ) overall.
