LUGGER ON THE BEACH

AT BRIGHTON

Drawn and Etched by E.W.Cooke

Published London 1829 in Cooke's "Sixty Five Plates of Shipping and Craft".

A fine antique print of a lugger drawn up on the beach at Brighton, Sussex, England with fishermen tending to their gear.

Note the traditional fisherman's storage shed fashioned from a disused boat cut in half.

Luggers were traditional fishing craft carrying two or sometimes three masts rigged with lugsails.

A crisp, dark impression in fine, clean condition. Dated in the plate.

Approx. 8.5" x 6.5" (210mm x 170mm) to the plate mark as shown, with wide margins beyond, printed on heavy grade wove paper, blank verso.

Edward William Cooke (1811-1880) was a highly respected 19th century marine and landscape artist. Born in Pentonville, London he was inspired by his father George Cooke the celebrated engraver, and much influenced by the Dutch marine artists, having travelled extensively throughout the Netherlands.
The etchings he published in" Sixty Five Plates of Shipping and Craft" are fine examples of his work and make wonderful prints for framing and display.
