MIDSUMMER EVE

Engraved by R&D Havell after George Walker

for "The Costume of Yorkshire" by George Walker

Published by Robinson and Son, Leeds 1814

A fine original aquatint of a midsummer eve celebration.

Newcomers to a town or village "set out a plentiful repast before their doors of cold beef, bread, cheese and ale".

Walker describes the custom as being observed in the Craven area as well as other parts of Yorkshire.

Dated in the plate.

From a first edition of Walker's "The Costume of Yorkshire" accompanied by the interesting related text in English and French.

A fascinating record of Yorkshire life in Regency England first issued as a part work in 1813 to 1814 and published as a complete book in 1814.

A most attractive print, ideal for framing and display.

Fine clean condition other than slight staining in the outer margins, free of repairs or restoration. The superb original colours remain bright and fresh.

Approx. 12" x 8" (300mm x 200mm) image area only.

Approx. 14.5" x 10.5" (370mm x 260mm) overall.
