An untitled set of engravings of Atlantic fish and shellfish species

From Barbot's "A Description of the Coasts of North and South Guinea and of Ethiopia Inferior, vulgarly Angola"............"with an Appendix; Being a general account of the First Discoveries of America..."

An interesting set of copper engravings of various fish species encountered by early 18th century sailors in the Atlantic Ocean. The fish are named as;

"A hornfish of natural bigness or coffre de mort, a mullet of the Bay of Rufisco, A sort of Crayfish very large, The stingray spotted, the dangerous pricking horn of this fish (stingray), The cat fish of Cape Verdo, A Cape Verdo Moon, unknown but is much like a pyke, a sarde with a great back, a sole of Cape Verdo, a kind of barbeiue, a grondin also grumbler, an ancornet also scuttle fish."

Fine condition. Centre fold as issued.

 Approx. 13" x 10" (340m x 250mm) printed area only. Printed on hand laid paper, blank verso.
