NORTH LANCASHIRE

(New Divisions of County)

by Henry James

Drawn up by Colonel Henry James of the Royal Engineers and published by the Boundaries Commission in 1868.

Printed at the Ordnance Survey Office, Southampton, England in 1868 using the zincograph printing process, a recently devised form of lithography using zinc plates to replace stone.

An original good sized 19th century antique map of North Lancashire showing the newly implemented parliamentary divisions of the county.

This includes the Coniston Water area of present day Cumbria, then part of Lancashire.

The whole country was surveyed for the Boundaries Commission as an update to the 1832 reform bill survey - a major shake-up of the nation's parliamentary representation.

The map is on a scale of 4 miles to an inch and is accompanied by a brief survey report on a separate sheet with interesting information on population and housing etc.

Enhanced with original hand colouring with a colour key to identify the various boundaries.

Fine, clean condition, free of repairs or restoration. Fold lines as issued (now stored flat), blank verso.

Approx. 19" x 13" (480mm x 330mm) printed area only, with margins beyond to facilitate mounting/matting and framing.
