LOW LIGHTS

Engraved by William Collard and Mark Lambert after John Wilson Carmichael

Published Newcastle upon Tyne circa 1835 by J.W.Carmichael & M.Lambert.

From "Views on the Tyne" by J.W.Carmichael.

An original 19th century steel engraved antique print of a beached ship at North Shields, Northumberland next to the Low Lights.

The Low Lights, together with the High Lights also visible beyond, are navigational lights to guide ships safely into harbour.

They can still be seen near the present day Fish Quay.

John Carmichael (1799-1868) was a celebrated marine and landscape artist based in Newcastle.

The engravings of his works comprise a fine record of life on 19th century Tyneside and are very scarce.
