THE COUNTIE OF

NOTTINGHAM Described

The Shire Townes Situation and the Earls there of Observed

by John Speed

Published by John Sudbury and George Humble, Popes Head Alley, London circa 1627

A fine original early 17th century copper engraved county map of Nottinghamshire by John Speed.

A crisp dark impression on robust hand laid paper, enhanced with attractive later hand colouring.

The title is displayed in an elaborate strapwork cartouche featuring putti armed with crossbows together with peacocks and a Royal coat of arms.

An even more elaborate cartouche contains a detailed town plan of Nottingham and the scale of miles is surmounted by a compass rose and dividers.

Also featured are a battle scene with historical notes and six coats of arms of the Earls of Nottingham.

The side and lower margins have been extended with period paper to facilitate mounting/matting and framing although all borders are intact.

Two small closed tears have been repaired verso. Otherwise the map presents very well indeed and would be a magnificent map for display.

Approx. 20" x 15" (510mm x 385mm) map area only with margins beyond.

John Speed (1552-1629)

Speed is without doubt the most celebrated and revered of all the early English map makers and his fine maps are widely collected all over the world.

The decorative flourishes combined with the most accurate cartography of the day make these maps both fascinating and visually appealing.

He is best known for his two great atlases, "The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine" and "Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World".

Many of the maps were however also sold individually, either uncoloured or coloured for a considerably higher price.

The successful London print sellers Humble and Sudbury were the original publishers with later editions to follow by Roger Rea and Bassett and Chiswell.
