CABANES DES HOLDS

Published Frankfurt 1719 in "Beschreibung des ganzen Welt Kreises....", a German translation of Mallet's "Description de L'Univers."
An interesting copper engraved antique print of a storage hut (Cabane des Holds) used by hunters and trappers on the shores of the island of Novaya Zemlya, Northern Russia. Furs are being transferred to a waiting ship and in the foreground wolves are being trapped while the trappers are attacked in turn by bears.
Fine condition, blank verso on light grade hand laid paper.
Approx. 6" x 4" (150mm x 110mm) image area only with good margins beyond.
Mallet started out as a soldier serving King Louis XIV as an inspector of fortifications but later was appointed as mathematics teacher at the King's court. He is chiefly remembered however for his publications of "
