Proposed Plan for the improvement of the PORT of LONDON
to admit SHIPPING between the BRIDGES of LONDON & BLACKFRIARS

by R.Dodd, Engineer.

Published London 28th July 1800 in the "Appendix to the third report of the select committee of the House of Commons, upon improvement of the Port of London"
An interesting and unusual large format copper engraved street plan of central London with original hand colouring, drawn up to support a bold planning application for new development, including a new bridge over the Thames. Dodd has added the annotation; "The proposed quays or embankments to be made on each side of the river, (in which will be deposited the excavated soil from deepening the bed of the river), will produce a superficial surface of 1,089,100 feet or 40,337 yards etc.."

The plan includes individual buildings and many streets are named. Covers from Chatham Place and Blackfriars Bridge in the west to London bridge in the east. It would make an absorbing comparison with the present day street layout and is a fascinating record of a rapidly changing London at the turn of the 18th century. Very scarce.
Fine condition, free of repairs or restoration, fold lines as issued. Dated in the plate.

Approx. 28.5" x 20.5" (720mm x 520mm) printed area only with margins beyond. Printed on robust, heavy grade paper, blank verso.
