Product Description

SMALL - HEADED OR SMEAR DAB

by Edward Donovan

From "The Natural History of British Fishes" by Edward Donovan, Published London 1803 by F&C Rivington.

An attractive original antique print. This is plate 44, the Smear Dab, accompanied by the related text.

A beautiful hand coloured lithograph, heightened in places with gum arabic. The original colours, including silver and gold paint, remain bright and fresh.
Dated in the plate.

The lifelike scaly sheen created by the use of a delicately applied varnish of gum arabic unfortunately is not captured by the camera but adds greatly to the visual appeal of these fine prints.

A wonderful fish print for framing and display.

Fine condition other than minor age blemishes as seen, free of repairs or restoration.

Approx. 8" x 4.5"(200mm x 120mm) to the plate-mark, as displayed in the image provided, with good margins beyond.
Printed on heavy grade wove paper, blank verso.

Edward Donovan. (1768 - 1837) was a notable zoologist, illustrator and author of a number of successful works on Natural History including fish, insects, birds and shellfish. He was also the proprietor of the London Museum and Institute of Natural History.
